"South Dakota State University’s Southeast Research Farm annual summer field day will be held on July 9 at 1:30 p.m. The research farm is located at 29974 University Road, Beresford, S.D. 57004. 

All field tours will begin at 1:30 p.m. and each tour will be repeated at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.  

The corn and soybean field tour will feature Jason Clark, SDSU Extension Soil Fertility Specialist, who will share a cover crop study with corn and soybeans. Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist, will talk about potassium management in corn and soybean systems. Current pest issues and soybean gall midge will be covered by Adam Varenhorst, SDSU Extension Field Crop Entomologist. SDSU Assistant Professor in the Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Sciences Department, Peter Kovacs, will speak about in-season crop management effect on yield and seed composition for soybean, as well as nitrogen timing effect on gain yield for corn. 

Paul Johnson, SDSU Extension Weed Science Coordinator, will lead a tour of weed demonstration plots and will provide corn and soybean herbicide demonstrations. 

The third tour will cover the small grain and forage fields and will begin with Sara Bauder, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist. She will share the forage research happening at the farm. David Karki, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist, will cover nitrogen and palisade of oats. Ben Brockmuller, SDSU graduate student, and Peter Sexton, SDSU Southeast Research Farm Supervisor, will discuss various uses for rye as cover crop or forage. Melanie Caffe, SDSU Assistant Professor and Oat Breeder, will talk about oat variety development. Gared Shaffer, SDSU Extension Weeds Field Specialist, will cover herbicide residual effects on cover crops after wheat and corn silage. 

The indoor presentations will begin at 3:30 p.m. Emmanuel Byamukama, SDSU Extension Plant Pathologist, will talk about small grain disease management tools and impacts of grazing on soil health. Peter Sexton, Southeast Research Farm Supervisor, will discuss managing prevent plant acres. Warren Rusche, SDSU Extension Beef Feedlot Management Associate, will cover minimizing heat stress in feedlot cattle. Jack Davis, SDSU Extension Crops Business Management Field Specialist, will discuss the market outlook. SDSU Extension staff will also share information on healthy stress management strategies as well as support strategies when dealing with the impacts of chronic stress or working with those suffering from chronic stress problems.

The feature presentation will take place at 5:40 p.m. Dennis Todey, Director of the USDA Midwest Climate Hub, will address current weather trends and crop production in our area.  The Midwest Climate Hub is located at the USDA-Agricultural Research Service National Laboratory for Agriculture and The Environment in Ames, Iowa.
