SDSU Northeast Research Farm field day, South Shore, SD, USA

"BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State University’s annual Northeast Research Farm Field Day will be held on July 11 at 4:30 p.m. The research farm is located at 15710 455 Ave., South Shore, S.D. It is 2.5 miles west of Interstate 29 off Exit 193 (South Shore Exit).

The first tour will be the Weed Management Tour. Paul O. Johnson, SDSU Extension Weed Management Coordinator, will talk about how pre-emergent herbicides worked in this unusual year and weed management strategies in the glyphosate-resistant weed period like dicamba, Enlist and Balance beans.

The second tour is the Fertility Tour. It will focus on nitrogen and potassium use in corn. Speaking on this tour are Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist; Jason Clark, SDSU Extension Soil Fertility Specialist and Peter Kovacs, Assistant Professor in the Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Department.

The third tour will be the Small Grains Tour. Spring wheat will be covered by Karl Glover, SDSU Spring Wheat Breeder. Oats will be covered by Melanie Caffe, SDSU Oats Breeder. Jon Kleinjan, SDSU Extension Crop Production Associate, will highlight all other small grains. In addition, small grain diseases will be presented by Emmanuel Byamukama, SDSU Extension Plant Pathologist.

The fourth tour is the CRP, Cover Crops and Weather Tour. Grassland/CRP will be covered by Peter Bauman, SDSU Extension Range Field Specialist. Herbicide residual effects on cover crops will be presented by Gared Shaffer, SDSU Extension Weeds Field Specialist. Nathen Edwards, Director of SD Mesonet, will talk about pesticide drift avoidance.

Between tours, Connie Tande, SDSU Extension Plant Diagnostician, will be available to discuss about plant sample issues, identification of pests or field problems.
