Growing Milling Oats in Western Canada: The dos and don’ts

Jenneth Johanson is a grain producer from Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba and is also a director of the Manitoba Oat Growers Association (MOGA), and the President of the Prairie Oat Growers Association (POGA). Raised on a grain farm, educated in Agriculture Studies, and a Certified Crop Advisor, Jenneth will share her firsthand experiences in growing milling oats. She will discuss field selection, varieties, fertilizer application, pest and disease management, and harvest and storage issues. Jenneth will also touch on the importance of research and variety development.

Oat Research and Variety Development at AAFC

Kirby Nilsen is an Oat Breeder at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Brandon Research and Development Centre. Kirby is from Saskatoon and completed his PhD at the University of Saskatchewan in Plant Science. Kirby will be presenting: Oat research and variety development at AAFC, in which he will be discussing his breeding program and the latest trends that are being used to develop new oat cultivars for western Canada.

PLUS, MarketsFarm expert Mike Jubinville will provide a market outlook for the oat complex.
